Obituary for Claudette Patterson

Mrs. Claudette Patterson (affectionately known as “Ms. Sista”) was born on June 3, 1934 in Eagle, West Virginia to the late Curtis and Princess Brown.

She attended Simmons and Washington High Schools where she was a majorette. She professed her faith in Jesus Christ at an early age and was an active member in her community. Mrs. Patterson joined First Baptist Church in London, WV where she was a member of the choir. She loved to sing hymns. One of her favorites was “I Got Heaven on My Mind.” Around 1969 she joined The Church of Jesus Christ in Montgomery, WV where she served faithfully. She also loved worshiping the Lord with the saints of God, often travelling to Canada and throughout the United States for church conventions.

On October 6, 1971, she was united in holy matrimony to the love of her life, the late Emmitt Patterson, Sr. They had one child from this union—Samuel. Her husband preceded her in death on July18, 1976. His son Mason and two daughters, Maestella, and Deborah preceded him in death. He also left behind Linda, Robert, Sr., Emmitt, Jr., James, Sr., Donald, and Larry, Sr.

Mrs. Patterson’s Christian life, her generous spirit and determined personality touched many and will forever influence the lives of all who knew her. She quietly departed this life Monday, December 23, 2019 in Charleston, WV. She was also preceded in death by her son—Larry DeWayne Smith, a brother—Donnie Brown, and a sister—Barbara Hartwell.

Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her children: Good and faithful Victoria Smith, Nolan Smith, Anola (Freddie) Fruit, Lloyd (Vanessa) Smith, Terry Smith, Shelby (Freddie) Hughes, all of West Virginia; Christopher (Teresa) Todd of Georgia, and Samuel (Terrell) Patterson of Maryland; 21 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and a host of great-great grandchildren; 2 sisters, 4 brothers; and her church family and friends.
