Obituary for Edith Nellie Willis

Edith “Nell” Willis, 91 of Charleston passed away on January 11th 2018. Known to all as Nana, Nell was born in, Amanote, W.V. on January 1, 1927, to Thomas Jefferson VanDyke and Annie Felty VanDyke.

Nell grew up in Virginia and West Virginia before settling with her family in Charleston in 1968. During World War II she worked in Washington DC for the FBI; she later worked as a secretary for a variety of organizations including the Teamsters Local 175 in Charleston and the First Methodist Church in Fairmont. During retirement, she also enjoyed working as a sales associate for the Fudge Factory in Sarasota, Florida and for Elder-Beerman in Charleston.

She was preceded in death by both her parents, her husband Guy, their infantdaughter, her sister Sue, and her brother Thomas. Nell is survived by her sons, Guy “Bill”& (Elaine) of Charleston WV and Jeffery& (Laurie) of Hurricane, WV. She has two Grandchildren Andrew Willis and Emily Adkins whom she loved dearly. She is survived by several nieces and nephewsas well as a host of Great nieces and nephews and friends.

She was a member of Morris Memorial Methodist Church where she was an active member for many years. Nell loved to cook; she participated in several chili cook-offs. She also enjoyed playing bridge, gardening, and sewing.She volunteered as a driver for Meals on Wheels of Charleston, the Sarasota (FL) Opera and other organizations. She was a friend to all who knew her and will be dearly missed.

A Memorial Service celebrating Nell’s life will be held at 2:30PM on January 27, 2018 at Morris Memorial Methodist Church in Kanawha City with Pastor Mark Flynn officiating. Visitation will be held from 1:30pm till 2:30pm followed by the Memorial Service. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation to Hospice Care or your local Animal Shelter.
