John Charles Lopez, 87, of Boomer passed peacefully with his family by his side on Monday November 10, 2014. John was reunited with his beloved wife and soul mate of 59 years, Betty Ayers Lopez. He was also preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.
John was born September 4, 1927 in Boomer, WV to Pete and Fannie Segrato Lopez. He was a member of St. Anthony’s Shrine Catholic Church and a 4th degree Knights of Columbus member. John was honored to be a part of the “Greatest Generation” as a WWII Veteran of the United States Army and Air Corps. John was the owner and operator of Lopez and Son Restaurant in Smithers, WV for 62 years. He was a dedicated member of the Laborer’s Union in Charleston, WV and was a Fayette County Magistrate for 17 years before retiring at the age of 72.
John spent his post retirement years working in his restaurant and spending time with his family. John was respected and loved by many. His spirit will be carried on by his sisters Mary Tabit, of St. Albans and Katie and husband Tex Ritter of Cleveland, Ohio, as well as his children Steve Lopez, Billy Lopez, Pete Lopez and his wife Pam, and Ellie Lopez Grimmett. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and one great great grandson, and countless nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the Catholic Daughters for their preparation of the Mercy Dinner. They would also like to thank the staff of Greater Charleston Dialysis, and his caring Doctors, Dr. Atassi, Dr. Espiritu, Dr. Josh, Dr. Faulknier, and especially Dr. Ron Biswas who John always referred to as “Chief.”
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 15, 2014 at St. Anthony’s Shrine Catholic Church in Boomer, WV, with Father Mark Gallipeau as Celebrant. Entombment follow at Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens in Glasgow, WV Friends may call on Friday 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM at the church where a Christian Wake Service will be held at 8:00 PM.
