Obituary for Elizabeth Mays

Elizabeth Austin Browning Mays, age 95, of Boomer, WV died on Saturday, March 5, 2016 at the Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston, WV. She was the wife of the late Leo Mays who died in 1997 and with whom she shared 32 years of marriage. She is also predeceased by her first husband Ralph Browning who died in 1959 with whom she shared 14 years of marriage. Born in Bluefield, WV, in 1920, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and the late Laura (Lloyd) Austin and beloved step- mother Lorene (Swor) Austin.

Elizabeth graduated from Cosmetology School and had many wonderful customers and friends in Montgomery, WV. During her early years she was involved in volunteer work as a nurse’s aid during World War II. After the war, she married, had three children and lived in Montgomery, WV. Her first husband was deceased in an automobile accident which left her a widow until she remarried, moved to Boomer and became the step-mother to five children. While in Montgomery, many wonderful friends reached out to her and her children for which they will always be grateful. In Boomer, she spent her years as a housewife, mother and grandmother. Her second husband was involved in an accident in 1974 which left him totally dependent on her. She took lovely care of him until he passed in 1997. She remained in Boomer surrounded by friends and family until moving to Lexington, KY for several years and then returned to WV as a resident of Autumn Way Care Facility in Rupert, WV which became a loving home for her.

She was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church in Montgomery, WV.

Survivors include Margaret (Casey) Smith of Rainelle, WV, Jeff (Pam) Browning of Wellington, FL, Ann (Danny) White of Lexington, KY, Marilyn (Buzzy) Fish of Boomer, WV, Robin Mallernee of Asheville, NC, Eddie Mays of Fayetteville, WV, Mike (Teena) Mays of Richmond, VA, Teena Hardee (Gary Hanlon, fiancée) of Windsor, CA, and fifteen grandchildren (Erin, Zach, Taylor, Jairus, Ian, Tony, Steve, Lisa, Josh, Mimosa, Amy, Sarah, Robert, Nathan, Cody) , and thirteen great grandchildren (Xane, Xyler, Ryker, Gemma, Elam, Easton, Julian, Tessa, Xander, Sebastian, Ruby, Penelope, Cooper) and one great-great grandchild (North). She was predeceased by one sister, Virginia (Austin) Mollohan.

Arrangements are being made by O’Dell Funeral Home in Montgomery, WV with visitation on Friday, March 11, 2016 from 12:00 noon until 2:00 pm with the funeral service to begin at 2:00 pm with the Rev. Steve Martin officiating. Her interment will follow at Montgomery Memorial Park, London, WV. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that contributions be made in her memory to Autumn Way Care Facility, P. O. Box S, Rupert, WV 25984 or The Hubbard Hospice House, 1001 Curtis Price Way, Charleston, WV 25311.
