Obituary for Norma Lucille Nutter Dalporto

Norma Lucille Nutter Dalporto died Thursday, February 28, 2013.
Norma was predeceased in 2001 by Secondo Dalporto, her devoted husband of fifty plus years. She was also predeceased by her first child, Susan Dalporto, in 1990.
Norma is survived by three of her children, John Secondo, Thomas Paige, and Mary Lisa, as well as by her grandchildren, Mary Michael, Gillian, Gabriel, Maguire, Chelsea, Nathan, Casey, Hannah, and Emilio, and 6 great grandchildren.
She was a child of the roaring 20's and the Depression and a wife and mother during and after WWII. Norma was an accomplished bridge player. She was a good sport at golf and an enthusiastic tennis player.
She had a refined taste and elegant style. She collaborated with prominent architects and interior designers on the three homes she and Secondo built.
She adopted her mother in law's Italian dishes and made them her own. They quickly became holiday and family reunion staples.
She went back to college in the 1950s, after having taken a hiatus to marry Secondo during World War II, and to give birth to their first child, Susan. She received her bachelor’s degree in mathematics from West Virginia Institute of Technology. She taught Algebra at Montgomery High School. By all accounts, she was a great and memorable teacher.
She nurtured those in need, be they humans or animals. In Charlton Heights, the Dalporto house was where the stray dogs and cats and injured wild animals ended up. After recovery and release, Ringo Starling would come back yearly to perch on the kitchen window sill. Likewise for other injured birds and injured chipmunks.
She loved music, enjoyed harmonizing, and was an incessant hummer, from Guys and Dolls to the Beatles. She encouraged her kids to pick up an instrument and rarely complained about the resultant cacophony.
She was strong, sweet, sensitive, and tolerantly accepted far and wide for her eccentricities. She was a courageous cancer survivor.
Visitation will be from 5pm to 8pm Sunday, March 3rd at O’Dell Funeral Home in Montgomery, WV. There will be an opportunity for family and friends to share memories, music and poetry beginning at 6:30.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM Monday, March 4th at St. Anthony’s Shrine Catholic Church in Boomer, WV followed by entombment at Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens in Glasgow, WV.
