Obituary for Robert E. "Gene" Carroll

Robert Eugene Carroll (Gene), 70, of Charlton Heights, WV, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on June 25, 2013, at Hubbard Hospice House. Gene was born on September 29, 1942, in Montgomery, WV, along with his twin brother, Jackie. Gene fought a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Maxine and Hoy O’Dell.
Gene was a 1961 graduate of Montgomery School where he played football and basketball. He retired from Elkem Metals in Alloy. Some of his passions included long distance running, spending time at the beach, riding his two Harley Davidsons and visiting with friends and family. He was an avid fan of the West Virginia Mountaineers.
Survivors include his daughter, Janette Lynn Walker, son-in-law, Clif and two grandchildren, Dugan and Maggie of Suwanee, GA; son, Timothy Carroll, of Charlton Heights; twin brother Jackie Carroll and his wife Neva of Charlton Heights and two nephews Christopher Carroll and his wife Angie of Georgetown, SC and Jeffrey Carroll of Charleston, SC; Aunt, Martha DeMark, of Fredericksburg, VA and several cousins. Gene is also survived by Linda Brown Carroll who has always held a special place in his heart.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. James Frame and the staff of CAMC Memorial 4th Floor West and Hubbard Hospice House for the special care given to Gene. Also thanks to Dr. Anderson and staff at Montgomery General Hospital. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to Hubbard Hospice House, 1001 Kennawa Drive, Charleston, WV 25311 or The David Lee Cancer Center of Charleston, WV.
In memory of Robert Eugene Carroll a celebration of his life will be held Saturday, June 29, 2013, at 3:00 p.m. at O’Dell Funeral Home in Montgomery, WV with Rev. Randy Black officiating. Friends and family will remain after the service for a time of visiting. An additional memorial service will be planned for May, 2014, for spreading of his ashes during Bike Week in Myrtle Beach, SC. This memorial service will be a final celebration with friends and family to commemorate a life lived to the fullest.
