Obituary of Sarah Julia Smith Shanklin “Judy”
Sarah Julia Smith “Judy” Shanklin was born on January 14, 1917 in Kingston, Fayette Co., WV to the late George Smith and Ruby Hope Smith Spencer. Judy was raised in Holly Grove, Kanawha Co., WV by her grandmother Sarah Margaret Hope and graduated from East Bank High School in 1935 then married on December 23, 1939.
Judy is preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Truman A. Shanklin who died in 981. Judy remained in Holly Grove until 2003, when at 86 years of age, when the left Holly Grove and moved to Charlotte, NC with Family.
She is survived by daughter Patricia L. Weekley and husband Keith of Charlotte, NC, her son David L. Shanklin and wifeBecky of Holly Grove, WV. four grandchildren Steve and wife Kim and Bobby Shanklin all from Holly Grove, WV and Lisa Weekley Starnes and DeAnn Weekley both of Charlotte, NC.
Also survived by 6 great-grandchildren, Seth, Zachary, Jordan and twins Kaleb and Jakob Shanklin all living in Holly Grove, WV and Taylor E. Starnes of Charlotte, NC.
Judy was a member of Holly Grove Baptist Church and attended many years at the Old Kanawha Baptist Church of Pratt, WV. Judy was also a long term member of the Coleman Booster Sunday School Class at Old Kanawha Baptist.
The graveside service will be held at 11 am Wednesday, October 6, at Montgomery Memorial Park in London, WV with Rev. Kennith Brougham and Rev. Phyllis Bowling officiating. Visitation and the “Celebration of her life” will be at the Home of David and Becky Shanklin in Holly Grove, WV following the service.
