Obituary for Hortense Elizabeth Groom

Hortense Elizabeth Minor Groom, 82, of Charleston passed away on May 27, 2016 at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, GA after a long illness. She was born Jan 16, 1934, to James and Vivian Minor. Hortense was a faithful member of Levi First Missionary Baptist Church and a member of the Mass and Senior Choirs. Her family was her life, to whom she devoted her time; as well as raising many of her Grand and Great-Grandchildren.

Hortense is survived by her eleven children James (Viola) Groom of Lexington, KY; Henry Groom of Charleston;Ebernezer Groom of Snellville, GA; Rossina Groom of Charleston; Michael Groom of Atlanta, GA; Louis (Victoria) Groom of Charlotte, NC; Derek Groom of Decatur, GA; Cynthia (Garry) Gause of Bucksport, SC; Alita (Kevin) Kindred of Tucker, GA; Jolande Groom of Charleston; Jacqueline Groom of Decatur, GA; her siblings James, Charles, Marva, Patricia, Kalvin, Vanessa, Kennedy; 24 Grandchildren and 32 Great-Grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents James and Vivian Minor; her husband Ebernezer Groom; and two siblings Shirley Jarrett and Allen Minor.

Service will be held at 1:00 PM Friday at Levi First Missionary Baptist Church in Rand with Rev. James Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Montgomery Memorial Park at London. Friends may call on Thursday from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at O'Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery. Burial will follow at Montgomery Memorial Park. O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, is in charge of arrangements.
